Latest news live updates: 10,787 UK variants reported in 736 samples in India
A new « double mutant variant » of the coronavirus has been discovered in 18 states in the country, in addition to many other strains or variants of concern ( VOCs) that were also found abroad, said the Ministry of Health today amid fears of a second wave of the crisis in the country.
« Although VOCs and a new double mutant variant were found in India, these were not detected in sufficient numbers, either to establish a direct relationship or to explain the rapid increase in cases in some states, « the ministry said.
Of 10,787, the British variant was reported in 736 samples in India. The South African strain of coronavirus has been detected in 34 people in the country, and the Brazilian variant has been observed in a sample, the government said.
India recorded 47,262 fresh coronavirus cases in one day. This was the highest increase in one day so far this year. The nationwide COVID-19 number rose to 1,17,34,058, the Union Ministry of Health announced on Wednesday.
The active case number rose for the 14th consecutive day to 3.68,457, which is 3, 14 percent of total infections, while the recovery rate continued to decline to 95.49 percent, according to the ministry.
The daily increase in infections was the highest in 132 days, while the number of COVID-19 deaths in the country rose to 1.60 .441 rose. 275 new deaths were the highest in around 83 days.
