LOS ANGELES – It’s been a tough week for NBA newbies thanks to LeBron James.

James Wiseman of Golden State felt the blast of air from 36-year-old James drove past him to the rack, while Nico Mannion’s bones rattled when he came across James, who set his muscular body down for a screen. Minnesota’s Anthony Edwards saw his 29-point breakout overshadowed when James led a 137-point attempt with a triple-double.

Of the field the Lakers have faced this week, the Chino Hills LaMelo Ball could be the best. The 19-year-old never stopped fighting, scoring the last of his 26 points 6.6 seconds ahead and still trying to pull away from the double-digit numbers.

James scored 37 points in a lively 14v22 shooting night as the Lakers tied off visiting Charlotte Hornets (116-105) at the Staples Center on Thursday night. It was the fourth straight win since the All-Star break and the sixth in eight games. They improved to 11: 7 without All-Star Anthony Davis and moved back to second place in the Western Conference, after Phoenix only 1½ games behind the league leader Utah Jazz.

Another win without Davis and another big night from James pushed coach Frank Vogel to make a few cuts in the candidacy of James’ candidacy for his fifth MVP award. This led to a « mistake » that the 36-year-old went eight years without one despite widespread recognition that he is still the best player in the game.

« There were other players who deserved it, but he was the best player in the league for as long as I can remember, maybe since his second or third year in the league, » said Vogel. « It’s just one of those things that is unhappy. That’s not right. And he should get it this year. He does it every night and nobody deserves it that way. »

James provided much of the final boost in extinguishing Charlotte and Ball’s angry offer, particularly on defense. A block against Terry Rozier that ended on 20 points, 3 minutes ahead, was the kind of momentum that gripped the defensive game that somehow stayed off the ground with Davis.

Dennis Schröder, who wore gold shoes, added 22 points as the Lakers left their young challenges 33-26 in the final frame. Schröder’s 10 points in the fourth quarter led the group.

Even when Vogel repeated his case for James’ next MVP award and Kyle Kuzma said James should have won MVP « at least 8, 9, 10 times, everyone knows, » James was reluctant to campaign. While he admitted that he believes he should have more than the four he has, he believes that every great player thinks they should have more.

« At my age, what I can do, what I’ve been doing all season, what I put on the table on both sides of the floor every night, it would mean an incredible thing to me, especially at this point in mine Career, ”he said. « So we just see where the chips can be. »

James smiled just before the start as he hugged the youngest ball near the 3-point line. That good mood led to his start as he had 12 points in less than six minutes.

The lead didn’t build up quite as quickly, but the Lakers managed to part ways in the third quarter when Schröder slipped into the paint to make up for a dodgy night out of the area, and Talen Horton-Tucker, who saw his minutes ticking until recently began to follow suit.

None of the top Hornets players had a particularly fun first half. Gordon Hayward only had two points at break and Ball only started 2 to 8.

However, James ended halftime with a flourish and plunged into the paint for a summer beating layup with a quick 22-point tunnel transition.

But the Hornets dropped a break from the break and did without Cody Zeller in the start group. They quickly reaped results on a 19-4 run to end the game when ball knocked in a layup.

After three games in a row in which the bank was above average, some decline was noticeable. Montrezl Harrell had scored 17 or more points in four consecutive games but struggled only 2 to 6 off the ground and 7 points – the Lakers finished with him on the bench. After missing two games due to a concussion, it took reserve guard Alex Caruso some time to go on the offensive: he missed his first six shots of the game and the Lakers closed with him anyway in his defense.

The smaller line-up and some of the bench fights meant it was a back and forth against a Charlotte team in the third quarter that had exceeded most preseason expectations to find themselves in the Eastern Conference playoff position . Ball had spoken before the game about how unimpressed he was with his first meeting with James – his brother Lonzo’s former teammate – and during the competition he displayed the same steadfast demeanor while throwing 3-pointers and throwing cross-court pennies .

« I think he’s damn good to be his age, » said James, who knows something about being a teenage phenomenon. “His speed, his quickness, his ability to shoot in all facets – in color, in swimmers, in 3s. He already has a three-stage. And it only gets better.  »

But the business of winning the NBA? There is still a lot to be done in this department.
