World news – Lee Westwood happy with second best in the Players Championship

The 47-year-old Englishman has finished second both times in the last two PGA Tour events and bagged $ 2.649 million.

He didn’t win the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill last week, where Bryson DeChambeau ousted him one shot. And he didn’t win Sunday’s Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass, where Justin Thomas beat him with one shot.

« A bit disappointed that I didn’t win, but after a second place in the Players Championship you can not to be missed, « said Westwood after scoring a disappointing par 72 after two goals in the final round on Sunday. Shot lead into the day. « I just have so much fun. Everyone keeps telling me how old I am. I’m 48 in a month and I’m still out here to play tournaments and end groups with great players like Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas and. » To play people like that. It’s just a pleasure to be there and still play well and assert oneself. «

Of course, it would have been more gratifying to have won. Westwood, who has 44 career wins worldwide but only two on the PGA Tour (the last one in 2010), complained that he didn’t have his best stuff on Sunday.

« I didn’t play my best golf game » said Westwood. « I probably had my ‘C’ game but I fought it. I was proud of myself for that. My legs felt a little heavy and I felt a little sluggish, like I wasn’t swinging as well and I would Nor did he hit the ball. «

Westwood turned three holes on the top nine and shot 1-over, but he still turned the corner with a 2-shot lead. However, Thomas lapped him around the curve with a 5-under-par course from No. 9 to 12.

Westwood said on Saturday that the Players Championship is one of the most difficult tournaments in the world to be the front runner.

Westwood still went away with a smile. It hurt him not to win, but it was an enlightening stretch of golf for him – his form was at his best in time for the Masters next month.

« What do I get out of the two weeks? Just a lot of pride, « he said. » These are world class fields. These are young people that I give most of 20, 25 years to, and yes, I still fight. I enjoy it. It’s exciting to be out here and still play well. «

» I’m going to play Augusta with my son Sam, « he said. « Tomorrow is going to be a good Monday. It’s the first time he’s playing there. He was with me years ago, but he’s on the Masters himself for me this year, so I guess I’ll take him with me for Monday and Playing 36 holes Tuesday. Be a good trip for boys and dads. Looking forward to something.  »
