According to her AAU trainer Richard Jeter, she is an « athletic freak » whose game is a mixture of LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo.

The Huskies landed another award-winning recruit on Saturday and secured one Commitment to five-star prospect Ayanna Patterson of Indiana.

Patterson, a 6-foot-2 wing from Homestead High School, Ind., Chose the huskies across Louisville, Indiana, Notre Dame and UCLA where her brother Andre played. She was ranked number 3 in the class of 2022 by ESPN.

« A dream to be a coach [Geno Auriemma] in the Hall of Fame is what you dream of, » Patterson told Hearst Connecticut Media before her announcement . « Really, there is a name in women’s basketball that excels at college recruiting and everything.

» Basketball, it speaks for itself with the … national championships and the women it has now in the WNBA. «

Patterson, 17, is UConn’s second engagement in the class after Isuneh Brady of California, who announced her decision in December 2019. The 6-3 Brady is ESPN’s No. 5 prospect.

» Man could argue that she is the best athlete in her class, « said national recruiting expert Shane Laflin. » Videos are circulating of her dipping the ball with two hands and dribbling. A real dunk. «

Jeter, her coach at Ohio United, went one step further and called her the best athlete in all of women’s basketball. Seriously.

» It’s just crazy. I haven’t seen anyone, ”said Jeter,“ who can lift off one leg and dive down and then dive down from two and barely make it, but pull it back and just throw it in. And then flip around and run a 100 yard (sprint) like a track star.

« It’s like the Greek freak and Lebron mingling. She gets the defensive rebound, end to end, it’s really hard to stop her. You won’t get her shot That won’t happen. «

Jeter is married to former UConn star Tamika Williams, the first No. 1 recruit in program history and a member of the national championship teams in 2000 and 2002. Williams finished the field goal percent with 70, 3 as the absolute front runner of the huskies, which is also an NCAA record. She is currently an assistant coach for the state of Ohio.

« It’s so rare for a school like [UConn] to recruit a child, » Jeter said. « It’s a special situation. Just being a McDonald’s All-American or having a rank [sometimes that’s not enough]. You have to be a little more special to get that kind of interest. A handful of people get that. » / p> It wasn’t difficult to sell Patterson in the huskies selection given their illustrious history of winning championships. Patterson has idolized the program since childhood, especially stars Maya Moore and Breanna Stewart.

Patterson could Not visiting Storrs due to COVID-19 restrictions, but she took a quick trip to Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis last month to see the Huskies play butlers.

« UConn is global everywhere. They came to butlers play [Feb. 27] the stands were full. Everywhere they go they’ll grab the bleachers, « she said. » They’re a big name in Indiana too. «

» Geno is a straight shooter  » said Jeter and passed on a conversation, that Auriemma had run with Patterson’s father. « What your dad really liked about him is that he’s very honest. He pretty much said, » Hey, I’ve trained 100 of you. Take a look at the resume. If you want to be a pro, I have more than anyone else. « It wasn’t arrogant, it was just, » If you want to be a pro, I can prepare you. «

» Ayanna cried after every loss, « said Jeter. » I don’t think she’ll cry much if she decides to go there. She won’t cry too often. She just wants to be great. «
