Around 10 fire engines are currently at the scene

Flames and smoke can be seen for miles after a huge fire broke out at a bank building in Skelmersdale.

The blaze started shortly before 8pm at the site of the former Co-op bank on High Street, in the centre of the town.

Around 10 fire crews are currently at the scene and are attempting to bring the fire under control.

Dramatic pictures and video of the scene show huge plumes of smoke billowing from the massive flames at the site.

As the premises crumble in the blaze, fire crews can be seen tackling it from all angles.

Officers have put a number of road closures in place while members of the incident response unit are also on hand if needed.

Travel site INRIX posted an update on the incident to warn residents of which roads were closed.

They said: « High Street in both directions closed due to building fire between Westgate and Jubilee Drive.

« The road has been closed since Tuesday evening. Westgate is also closed due to the fire. »

A spokesperson for Lancashire Fire added: « Lancashire Police have closed a number of roads in the area and the public are advised to stay away from the scene. »

There are currently dozens of fire fighters at the scene of the derelict building in Skelmersdale.

Residents in the area have said it was the site of the former Co-op bank building that has laid empty for a number of years.

Posting an update on Twitter, Lancashire Fire said: « We have eight fire engines from Lancashire, Manchester Fire and Mersey Fire at a derelict building fire on High Street, Skelmersdale.
