The 2021 MLB off-season continues as we get closer to opening day. And as we expected, the Los Angeles Dodgers are at the forefront, this time with a deal with the Oakland Athletics.

According to Jeff Passan, ESPN MLB insider, four players will be California-based in a deal between the two Ball clubs moved. LHR Adam Kolarek and outfielder Cody Thomas travel to Oakland. Infielder Sheldon Neuse and RHP Gus Varland join the reigning World Series champions.

Kolarek has four years of MLB experience – 2.5 with the Tampa Bay Rays and 1.5 with the Dodgers. He has an 11-3 record, a 3.32 ERA and has had an impressive 3-0 season with a 0.95 ERA.

Thomas has yet to make his MLB debut. He was selected by the Dodgers in the 13th round in 2016 after playing college baseball and football in Oklahoma. He has spent the past few years in the minor leagues.

Neuse was a Washington Nationals second round election in 2016 but was sold to athletics before making his MLB debut. He saw his first action in 2019 and went on to score 14 hits with a batting average of 0.250.

Varland has spent the past few years in the minor leagues. Since his amateur days, he’s set a respectable 26-11 record of 2.39 ERA.

It’s not exactly a blockbuster trade, but such moves can affect teams building their rosters in a way that we don’t always expect.
