Mitch Evans explained to Autosport the « plane crash » that resulted in Alex Lynn being rushed to the hospital and causing the red flag for the second Diriyah E-Prix.
Mahindra Racing has confirmed that its driver Lynn was discharged from the hospital after receiving the results of CT scans. He was accompanied by team principal Dilbagh Gill.
The Briton drove for 14th place against Jaguar Racing driver Evans on lap 26 of 29 when the pair collided in the braking zone on approach to Turn 18 – which was the same on both night races proved to be a major overtaking point.
This sent Lynn up in the air and on her head before sliding across the asphalt and resting between the TecPro barrier and the outer concrete wall at the bottom of the drain.
« Im Basically, I defended myself hard against Alex in [Turn] 18 and he went close to the wall.
« He didn’t really withdraw. Was there room? I’m not sure I’ll have to see the replay.
Evans was also eliminated immediately, and the race was marked in red three minutes before the end after a first but longer run behind the safety car – with the field through the Pit lane was diverted.
« He seems fine, but he’s gone as a precaution to make sure there’s nothing after the shock wears off.
» It wasn’t a nice moment. At some point I was able to see him above me. It wasn’t nice.
« I saw him go into the wall and jumped out to make sure he was okay.
» Hopefully there’ll be a repeat soon. But I think it’s a racing event. We drove hard for P-Nowhere.
Lynn was the second driver who needed a preventive assessment at the hospital. Venturi Racing’s Edoardo Mortara was picked up after a brake failure in free practice that eliminated four Mercedes cars from qualifying while the FIA assessed their safety.
Mortara said, « I’m fine. I would lying when I tell you I’m perfectly fine.
« It’s a feeling I would like to forget. I felt like a passenger. I couldn’t do anything more. I ran out of brakes.
