Prime Minister Daniel Andrews has made a decision to honor Margaret Court on this year’s Australia Day.
Mr Andrews said Ms. Court did not display the values or represent the attitudes that were supported by the majority of Victorians.
Describing the court’s views as « hateful », Andrew said he was « tired of talking about this person every summer ».
« Do we really have to do this every summer? Others have thought it appropriate to honor them, they are not decisions I make, » he said.
The details of those who will be honored on Australia Day will be released under an embargo on the media.
Broadcaster and writer Justin Smith announced the Court’s honor on social media this morning, saying « the debate that will follow after the 26th will be pointless and boring ».
« Australia is hard to believe that others are less than equal or have some form of anomaly that needs to be corrected. »
Smith said despite Court’s « gigantic tennis successes, » having a companion in the General Division would « put mankind at large » and Australia in the opposite direction. »
He urged Prime Minister Scott Morrison, the Governor General and the Council of the Order of Australia to reconsider the honor.
