while the nine rows of cardboard cutouts behind their bench were silent, including several dogs , the human noise being made at the Clune Arena came from Air Force Trainer Joe Scott yelling his team to « MOVE … THE … BALL » and from the screeching bench of San Diego State every time a shot was fired fell, which was often the case.

The loudest cheers on Sunday evening came at 1:47 p.m. after the Aztecs scored another goal after their 37-point victory here on Friday with a decision of 91:59. It came when their 13th 3-pointer made the net dance.

Wait. Shouldn’t he be pausing for at least two weeks with a hyperextended right knee, which when it happened on January 14th looked very similar to the elastic bands on the ligaments in it that were safely torn?

After the MRI showed no structural damage, Doctors said it was more of a pain tolerance due to bruised bones. If he could deal with the pain of wearing braces, he could play.

And so, at best, four days before his targeted return, he did it. The 6-foot-6 striker accompanied the team on the trip to the mountains, doing more and more exercises and shootarounds. He took part in most of the practice sessions on Saturday and convinced coach Brian Dutcher that he was ready to play.

He came on at 17:32 in the first half. He looked agile as always, although he turned to his teammates instead of chasing his shot as you might expect from someone who averages 15.3 points at team level. In his first three-minute stint, he did not attempt a field goal, but scored four points in the first half.

Mitchell finished with 10 points (with only four shots), seven rebounds and three assists in 14 minutes. Jordan Schakel, his older colleague, flew his first attempt in the second half with a ball, but embodied the team’s mentality for the next game and exploded in the following four minutes on the way to 24 points and six threes by 13 points / p> Terrell Gomez followed a 1 of 8 nights in his first SDSU start with 5 of 8 for 15 points. Adam Seiko came off the bench for nine points, all with a three-pack in the first half. Walk-on-Post Cade Alger, who scored his first college points on Friday, had four more Sundays in two minutes.

The Aztecs shot a total of 51.7 percent, but an even more impressive 16 of 30 behind the bow (53 , 3 percent). They had big advantages in the bank score (39-17) and the quick breakpoints (12-2).

After shooting 55 percent on Friday, the Falcons were still a respectable 46.7 percent and reduced their sales by 27 on 13. But that doesn’t matter if you’re absolutely down on the boards at 42-18. It was 16-2 on offense and the Falcons didn’t have a second chance point.

Aside from Mitchell’s presence and a more determined Falcons team, the game had some similarities to Friday. The Aztecs had four early turnovers and were a point behind before breaking out for a run that gave them a double-digit pillow. In 10 ½ minutes they already had 31 points – at a speed of 119.

But then they got cold and they managed 13 for the rest of the half. This and a strengthened Luftwaffe offensive with faster ball movement and an emphasis on sliding ball screens before setting resulted in a far more competitive half-time record: 44-31.

That was eight less than SDSU in the first 20 minutes on Friday and 15 more than the Air Force.

Dutcher was concerned about the effects of prolonged exposure to the 7,081 feet of altitude and subjected his players in shorter shifts than usual – in groups of two or three every three or four minutes. He’d gone 10 deep before the game was six minutes old. In the middle of the second half he called a time out just to get fresh bodies.

That paid off as the game progressed. Air Force scored just under 11 in their first possession of the second half (and had possession to reduce it to single digits), but Schakel caught fire and soon the lead was 33.

It wasn’t the 52 from Friday evening. But it wasn’t a « trip to the dentist », as Dutcher likes to call games in the Clune Arena. The win offset the Aztecs record in the blue band box of 11-11 in the Mountain West era.
