Alex Rodriguez could be like the man he called his « North Star ». It could have been in an owner’s box like George Steinbrenner once ruled.
Rodriguez could have been the head of the Mets. He, J. Lo, and their contingent would have owned the back, the radio waves, and – something Steinbrenner would surely have mastered – the social media.
Even without the Mets ownership, A-Rod retains Boss-like skills to Landing in the middle of it all.
« It’s not weird at all, » Rodriguez said via a media zoom to promote the festivities when asked if he would like to name the game of the team he is almost would have owned. « We did great. »
Then Rodriguez did what he did when he combined all of his shark tanking, lunches with Warren Buffett dudes, and baseball to give you a few buzzwords.
Since Steve Cohen didn’t have to deal with last year’s shortened pandemic season, he comes up with « dry powder » « hot ».
« I think in today’s environment, $ 100 million becomes $ 200 or $ 300 million A-Rod said.
This theory isn’t as suspect as the one in which A-Rod said straight leads are always better than odd, but still Francisco Lindor has the A-Rod inflation principle tested.
Now 45-year-old Rodriguez and the Mets have always been lovers of star crossings since the Wilpons, with Steve Phillips as spokesman, first spoiled A-Rod’s image when Phillps Rodriguez was called « 24-plus-one » -Gamer designated and ended the Mets pursuit as a free agent in 2000.
(I was the Mets beatwriter for The Post at the time. It was so eccentric and unexpected that he didn’t believe me when I called Assistant Sports Editor Dick Klayman.)
After Rodriguez A-Rod was revoked against Derek Jeter – that would be Willie, Mickey and the Great Duke been – he was always a Mets sideline. Now we almost had boss rod.
« We had what I think was the greatest boss of all time in George Steinbrenner, » said Rodriguez. “See the things he’s done. He never made any compromises. «
» It’s hard to say that someone could be like George, « said Rodriguez. “There is only one unique piece, right? He’s a legend for a reason. He would certainly have been a north star for me. Everything came from Mr. Steinbrenner from the point of view of what is best for the fans. He started every sentence: « What’s best for Yankee fans … », that would have been my approach. «
On the opening night, most Mets fans would probably think that Gary, Keith and Ron would be the best. Instead, A-Rod will be right in the thick of it and if I were a bettor I would make my money making trends, on Twitter, as opposed to Cohen.
« Some people like your job, » Rodriguez said. « Some people like it. Some people may not like it. When you do the national game, you’re not the usual one Voice they’re used to listening to.
« One of the tallest guys I’ve seen in my 25 years is Joe Buck, and I think he’s the tallest and he’s having a hard time. It’s just a business you won’t have all thumbs up on. «
A-Rod and Matt Vasgersian, now in their fourth season together, will likely talk about his pursuit.
