World news – Mets signs outfielder Kevin Pillar in the MLB Free Agency

The Mets upgraded their outfield again and agreed on a one-year contract with free agent Kevin Pillar on Monday, confirmed Mike Puma of the Post.

The 32-year-old gives the Mets a third option in the middle, along with Brandon Nimmo and Albert Almora Jr., who signed the minor league. He can also offer some flexibility in the left field, where Dom Smith is likely to start.

The right-hand pillar has jumped around with the Blue Jays after seven seasons. He hit .308 with two home runs, 13 RBIs and a .801 OPS in 24 games to close with the Rockies in 2020. Pillar started with the Red Sox last season, scoring .274 in 30 games.

The Mets, who missed award-winning midfielder George Springer, have been looking to improve their outfield this off-season. While Pillar has mostly played in the middle, he’s not the same player he was earlier in his career. He could also serve as a defensive substitute for Smith on the left. He could also face left-handers, whom he has had a .298 / .332 / .538 slash line against for the past two years.
