Miami Beach, Florida declared a state of emergency on Saturday over concerns over the large crowd of spring breakers gathering in the city.
Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber (D) said during a press conference Saturday that new measures are being implemented that « essentially aim to reduce the number of people » who come to the area.
Gelber announced it would be 8 p.m. Curfew in the entertainment district and a restriction of traffic to the east on urban causeways that will only be accessible to residents and hotel guests.
The measures will take effect at 9 p.m. Saturday and remains in effect for 72 hours. Gelber said he will hold an emergency meeting with the city commission on Sunday to discuss the measures.
The city later posted the emergency order on their Twitter account. According to the ordinance, these measures differ from those the city has taken to combat COVID-19.

The news comes as photos from the area show crowds pouring into town and gathering on its beaches, ignoring COVID-19 protocols.
Raul Aguila, Miami Beach’s interim city manager, said on Saturday he had received emails from companies that have voluntarily closed or refused to open due to the crowd.
The state of emergency marks an escalation point in the issue, according to reports on noisy spring breakers this month.
Gelber told CBS News that hundreds of spring breakers have been arrested for violating the city’s coronavirus guidelines, and that police officers were injured trying to deal with the crowd.
« If you come here because you think anything goes, you’re going to have a terrible time. We will arrest you. We made hundreds and hundreds of arrests, « Gelber said at the time.
The police had to disperse a crowd of around 200 spring breakers who were » unruly « and surrounded the officers at an intersection by shooting pepperballs. The Miami Beach Police Department said at the time that several people were arrested and two officers were injured.
According to the South Florida subsidiary of NBC News, police again had to use pepperballs to disperse a crowd on Friday after being in one A fight had broken out in the restaurant.
