Victoria’s Hotel Quarantine System Secretary Lisa Neville needs surgery after her Crohn’s disease « worsened » after a hiatus.
In a statement on Saturday, the police minister said doctors said surgery was the « only effective treatment » after she was hospitalized in February for persistent complications related to Crohn’s disease.
« The medical advice I received at the time was rest and treatment to give me the best chance of recovery without surgery, » said Ms. Neville.
« Despite two and a half weeks in the hospital, intensive biologic drug treatment, and three weeks of public rest, I did a series of tests this week, including an MRI, which suggests my condition is actually worsening. »
Ms. Neville will be hospitalized again Tuesday for a small bowel resection.
« At this point, that means I won’t be returning to my role until the end of June.
« While having part of your bowel removed is disappointing and always worrying, it can lead to a period of remission for many with Crohn’s disease and allow people to return to normal life and work after recovery.
« I have full confidence in my medical team and the nursing support at the hospital that this operation will give me the chance to achieve this. »
Ms. Neville thanked her friends and colleagues for their support, and particularly mentioned other Crohn’s sufferers who had reached out to her.
« This is a very hidden disease and unless you have experienced it firsthand it’s hard to understand the toll it can take, both physically and psychologically, » she said.
« It’s a small consolation that people are now learning more about Crohns, its triggers, and the severity that the complications can cause.
« With stress being a major cause of the illness, I ask that you ask for privacy over the next three months as I focus on my recovery and getting back to work. »
Crohn’s disease is a chronic condition that causes painful inflammation of the intestines and digestive tract. Almost 75,000 Australians suffer from this or related forms of inflammatory bowel disease.
Ms. Neville had previously said she had treated the disease for the past 32 years, but the last episode was « the worst I’ve faced ».
