When Magic Johnson tweets, you can expect very general analysis of players or teams. When Johnson speaks against it, you never know what he will say. Just take his latest comments on Lonzo Ball as evidence.

During an appearance on ESPN’s First Take Tuesday, Johnson said Ball had the highest basketball IQ of any point guard in the NBA. No, he wasn’t kidding.

« There’s no point guard in this league whose basketball IQ is higher than Lonzo Ball’s, » Johnson told Stephan A. Smith and the rest of the First Take Crew.

Johnson must have forgotten about Chris Paul. And LeBron James. And Rondo Rajon. And dozens of the other NBA players. It does not matter. Johnson is high on the ball and clearly believes he is one of the top point guards in the NBA today.

It’s worth noting that Magic Johnson picked Lonzo Ball for second overall in the 2017 NBA draft. In doing so, the Lakers missed out on players like Jayson Tatum, De’Aaron Fox, Donovan Mitchell and Bam Adebayo.

Lonzo Ball is definitely not a broke, but neither is he the star everyone believed would become . This season he has averaged the best 14.2 points of his career per game, along with 5.6 assists and 4.2 rebounds.

However, the greatest impact of the ball is not found in the statistics. His IQ is above average and Johnson believes he is the best at the sport. We don’t buy it. Neither are other basketball fans.

Magic Johnson’s praise for Lonzo Ball shouldn’t be ignored. Johnson himself is widely regarded as the greatest point guard of all time.

Ball still has some way to go before he can beat the basketball IQ of players like Chris Paul and even Rajon Rondo.
