New Amsterdam’s Jocko Sims on Reynolds’ return: ‘He feels guilty’

Why You Won’t See New Amsterdam’s « Lost » Influenza Outbreak Episode

New Amsterdam resumed one of its best surgeons on Tuesday – but was it just a temporary visit? Or will Dr. Floyd Reynolds there?

After a life-saving operation on his former colleague Dr. Vijay Kapoor Reynolds sat in front of a memorial to all hospital workers who were not so lucky and died during the COVID pandemic. « I should have been here, » complained Reynolds, who moved to San Francisco a year ago, to Dr. Lauren Bloom.

Will this sense of responsibility for going through the worst make Reynolds permanent in New Amsterdam? « That’s a good question because when I read that over there I assumed, » OK, would that be the catalyst for his stay? « Says his portraitist Jocko Sims to TVLine. » You’d think so, of course, and we’ll play the emotions of it to get you there, but there will be twists and turns. «

In the following, the actor also considers, what a change of location would mean for Reynolds’ relationship with his fiancée Evie, and talks about navigating his character’s uncertain future.

TVLINE | If he stays, what will it mean for him and Evie?
In reality, there are many things to consider if Reynolds was to stay. It’s entirely possible Evie and Reynolds will split up. It’s entirely possible for Evie to decide, “Hey, I made a mistake leaving New York. I can’t live without New York.” There are many options when you have a relationship like this. Would she return to New Amsterdam in particular? Who knows? We’ll have to wait and see.

TVLINE | The producers toyed with this idea of Reynolds leaving the hospital but not leaving the show, but maybe he is. They just keep teasing the fans. How was it for you to control all of this?
That was so much fun. It’s just kind of a fifth dimension of drama. Shows often play with the idea that a character might die or leave and I didn’t expect that to be something they play with, and they are, especially at the beginning of this series. [Laughs] You play with the audience a lot. And I think they like this room. One thing I’ll tell you about the original idea is that the pre-pandemic plan was for Reynolds to leave [in] episode 17 and you would see Reynolds again in episode 20 within the same season. We are talking about a matter of weeks. The pandemic is happening and it will be for over a year. Kudos to the writers for being able to stay on their toes and deal with something like a pandemic and keep us going. But the room we ended up in as a result, I think they like that. So we’re not going to tell you about Reynolds’ future or anyone else. [Laughs] Look, I’m saying this: I think they like it so much that I want to say that no character is ever safe. We found out at the end of season one that a character had died and we didn’t know who it was and it turned out to be Georgia, Max’s wife. I think similarly, by the end of this season, who knows, we might lose a character. I literally don’t know yet, but I think it’s very, very possible.

TVLINE | In a way, the pandemic made Reynolds’ absence more realistic because he has been gone for a year like he was in real life. He probably wouldn’t come back after a couple of weeks in real life.
Right, and it’s all fun, it’s all smart. This is another reason to see what is going on here. Once part of the story is written and aired, I look back and can’t imagine how it was originally written. It just wouldn’t feel right. That feels so right, especially now. We all have people, friends, girlfriends, mothers in one way or another … I miss my mother. I haven’t seen them since the pandemic started and this is the longest time I’ve passed [without seeing them]. So if you can have such an element in a story where someone is far away because something has to do with a pandemic or needs to come back or be locked down, then these are the things we deal with and it does it’s kind of real and fun to watch.

TVLINE | The scene with Lauren at the end of the episode, it seems significant that he shared that moment with her. How does her story relate to what is going on with Reynolds in that scene and possibly moving forward?
I feel like Bloom was more of the constant in Reynolds’ life that we’ve seen. His family has been a little turned upside down when it comes to accepting the woman he made up his mind with. [With] the job he was fired, he was reinstated, he was held responsible for the department, he was offered another job. The only thing that has been constant is the friendship between Reynolds and Bloom.
