World news – New Zealand blocks entry of travelers from India amid Covid Surge

New Zealand temporarily suspended entry for all travelers from India, including its own citizens, for about two weeks on Thursday after a high number of positive coronavirus cases arrived from the South Asian country.

New Zealand temporarily suspended entry for all travelers from India, including its own citizens, for about two weeks on Thursday after a high number of positive coronavirus cases had arrived from the South Asian country.

The move takes place after New Zealand registered 23 new positive coronavirus cases at its border on Thursday, 17 of which came from India.

« We are temporarily blocking entry to New Zealand for travelers from India, » Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said at a press conference in Auckland.

India is battling a deadly second wave of COVID-19 this week with daily infections exceeding the peak of the first wave last September.

The suspension begins April 11 at 4:00 p.m. local time and valid until April 28th. During this time the government will be looking into risk management measures to resume the trip.

« I would like to emphasize that while the arrival of COVID from India led to this action, we are investigating how we are generally with high risk origins This is not a country-specific risk assessment … « said Ardern.

New Zealand has practically eliminated the virus within its borders and has not reported any local community transmission for about 40 days.

But it has its border settings reviewed as more people are coming to New Zealand lately with infections, most of them from India.

Ardern said the moving average of positive cases has steadily increased, reaching 7 cases on Wednesday, the highest since last October.

New Zealand on Thursday also reported a new locally infected case of a worker employed in a coronavirus-managed isolation facility was. The 24-year-old had yet to be vaccinated.
