The long wait for the return of the NCAA men’s hockey tournament, which was suddenly canceled a year ago at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, is finally over.
Fargo, ND, will emerge as one of four teams to advance to the NCAA Frozen Four in Pittsburgh April 8-10. Much remains to be decided before then. And the four teams in this region have a plethora of storylines for the trip to Pittsburgh.
After all, the region features three of the top five crimes in college hockey and three of the top five crimes. The region has the only two teams in the country (North Dakota, American International) to have won both a conference championship and a tournament championship this year. It includes the two-time defending champion (Minnesota-Duluth). And it includes a Michigan team led by a ridiculously talented freshman class that includes CHN Rookie of the Year, Owen Power.
The action starts Friday afternoon at Scheels Arena, as Michigan competed in the first NCAA tournament matchup between programs since the 2011 national championship game against Minnesota-Duluth (3pm CT, ESPN-U) when UMD triumphed in extra time to win its first of three titles in the decade. North Dakota, the tournament’s top seed, will take on AIC in a nightcap (8:30 p.m. CT, ESPN3). The regional final will take place at 4:30 p.m. CT (ESPN-U) on Saturday.
All four teams will undergo COVID-19 tests and subsequent quarantine (without exercise) on Wednesday before training in Fargo on Thursday.
