Norwegian billionaire Øystein Stray Spetalen, who recently described Bitcoin as « nonsensical » , has made an undisclosed investment in the local Norwegian cryptocurrency exchange Miraiex, according to Finansavisen. In addition, he bought an unknown amount of Bitcoin.
Spetalen heavily criticized Bitcoin’s energy-hungry infrastructure at a conference earlier this month. He pointed out that bitcoin mining uses more energy than all of Norway. He also suggested that the European Union should ban Bitcoin immediately.
« It’s just nonsense, » concluded Spetalen. “We’re doing well with the payment systems that exist today.”
However, the billionaire’s mind was changed overnight when he met the founders of Miraiex from Oslo, the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the country. Spetalen admitted his view of Bitcoin was wrong.
« When the facts change, I change, » he told the local publication. « I met Miraiex founders Thuc and Øyvind the day after the podcast was recorded in early March and realized that I was wrong. »
Miraiex was founded in 2017 and offers trading in Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple and some other cryptos. The exchange makes money charging 0.5 percent for crypto trades and is growing aggressively.
His investment in the cryptocurrency economy was influenced by Kjell Inge Røkke’s foray into cryptocurrency by starting a new company called Seetee Bought $ 58 million in Bitcoin.
Apparently, Spetalen isn’t the only one in the traditional finance industry to change its mind about Bitcoin. Jamie Dimon, who runs Wall Street giant JPMorgan Chase, was a sharp critic of Bitcoin, but his company is now heavily investing in decentralized infrastructure and is also bullish about Bitcoin.
