World news – NSW announces mass vaccination center

NSW Prime Minister Gladys Berejiklian said the state is « stepping up » to address delays in vaccine rollouts by establishing a mass vaccination center in Sydney.

The hub will be in Homebush in addition to the 100 vaccination sites already operating across the state.

« So even after we did the 300,000 (doses) we were asked for, the New South Wales government will continue to have 100 locations across the state, in addition to a mass vaccination center in Homebush. » She said.

« We estimate that after the 300,000 we’re responsible for, we can get about 60,000 vaccinations a week, half in Homebush and half in the other 100 locations across the state. »

Ms. Berejiklian also took a subtle slap on the prime minister during the announcement, saying that NSW’s ability to vaccinate people depends on a steady supply of vaccines to the federal government.

« New South Wales does not want to see any further delays, so we are stepping up our commitment to the Commonwealth, » she said.

« Can I address this really critical point? Our ability to get 60,000 vaccinations a week depends on receiving the vaccine supply from the Commonwealth.

« Ultimately, the Commonwealth is responsible for getting the vaccine into the states. They are responsible for making sure we have these doses to deliver. »
