A man known for running errands for the elderly on a housing project in Brooklyn had a dark secret for years, police said Thursday: If they didn’t pay him, he would murder them.
The NYPD has arrested a suspect in the serial murders of three women in their Brownsville building, most recently on Monday, officials said at a press conference.
Kevin Gavin, 66, of Crown Heights, committed « unspeakable acts of violence » against women who trusted him enough to let him into their homes, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez told reporters.
Gavin strangled, stabbed and allegedly bludgeoned his victims at 393 Powell Street, a short drive from his House located in the Carter G. Woodson Homes.
The suspect is a handyman who confessed to the gruesome murders and told police officers that the victims owed him money, law enforcement officials said.
« We ve We continue to follow any leads of other incidents Mr. Gavin may be involved in, « NYPD chief investigator Rodney Harrison told reporters when announcing Gavin’s arrest.
» He had a relationship with the victims. What we currently believe is that it sounds like the reason he might have committed these acts is because of an argument about money or finances. «
The youngest victim, Juanita Caballero (78), was found on Monday in her apartment on the sixth floor with a string around her neck, the police said.
In May 2019, he should be Jacolia » Jackie » Fatally beat James, 83, whose battered body was discovered by a family member.
He killed another elderly woman, Myrtle McKenny, at the housing project in 2015, officials said. She was fatally stabbed in the neck.
« Our hearts and prayers go to families, » said Gonzalez. His office puts together a grand jury for the case.
« I wanted the community to know I know how devastating these losses have been for the people in Brownsville who live in these homes, » Gonzalez said.
« These women are beloved mothers, grandmothers and neighbors, » he added, noting that « there is fear in the Woodson houses of what will happen there. »
He added, « He was allowed into theirs Houses and has committed unspeakable acts of violence against them. «
