JTA – A Delaware rabbi blessed US President-elect Joe Biden and his wife Jill before they left the state for the inauguration of the president by quoting this week’s Torah portion of the Israelites’ flight from Egypt describes.
Rabbi Michael Beals explained the meaning of « Bashert », the Yiddish term for fate that is often used to describe a married couple, at the farewell ceremony in New Castle.
He applied it to the Bidens who attended the event at a National Guard center named for Joe Biden’s late son Beau, but also said Biden was Bashert for the presidency.

“It is a grim indeed that you, our dear elected President, are being initiated into the week that Jews around the world are reading from the Book of Exodus, which is about Moses taking us from us 400 years of pioneering Egyptian slavery was freed by an autocratic cruel pharaoh, « said Beals. « In many ways, dear Joe, you are our Moses. »
This week’s Torah reading, or Parsha, describes the Egyptian pharaoh commanding the Israelites to go after the 10th plague – the death of the firstborn.
Beals has spearheaded Biden’s Jewish public relations work, often describing his first meeting with Biden at campaign events, who appeared at the Shiva of a woman who donated $ 18 to each of his campaigns.
