World news – Over 6,500 migrant workers die during World Cup work in Qatar – Newsbook

More than 6,500 migrant workers from India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have died in infrastructure work for the World Cup in Qatar over the past ten years.

These figures compiled by the Guardian mean that since On the night of December 2010, when Qatar’s controversial victory was declared, an average of 12 migrant workers from these five South Asian countries died every week.

The actual death toll is likely to be much higher as no data were available for Asian and African countries posting large numbers of workers to Qatar including the Philippines and Kenya.
