In a breathtaking blow for moviegoers, the movie chains Pacific Theaters and ArcLight Cinemas will not reopen their locations, the company announced on Monday.
« After closing our doors more than a year ago, today we have to share the difficult and sad news that Pacific will not reopen its ArcLight cinemas and Pacific Theaters locations, » said a statement from Company. « This wasn’t the result anyone wanted, but despite a tremendous amount of work that has exhausted all potential options, the company has nowhere to go. »
Pacific, based in Los Angeles, whose locations include the popular ArcLight Hollywood on Sunset Boulevard, is the latest victim in the COVID-19 pandemic that wrecked the theater exhibition industry. Los Angeles theaters reopened just last month in time for the release of Warner Gods « Godzilla vs. Kong ». While large chains like AMC reopened quickly, smaller companies took longer.
Theaters across the country have been negotiating deferred rent payments to landlords. It’s not clear what ultimately forced Pacific and ArcLight to throw in the towel. Alamo Drafthouse of Austin, Texas had previously filed for bankruptcy, as had Studio Movie Grill.
Founded in 2002, ArcLight has 11 locations – six in the Los Angeles area, including the Hollywood flagship Theater and the Pacific Cinerama Dome on Sunset Boulevard. It also has theaters in Boston, Chicago, Washington and San Diego.
