Penguin Trainer Mike Sullivan explains that his main consideration when creating a line-up for each game is this to attract the players he believes give his team the best chance of winning.

Substitute goalkeeper Casey DeSmith will be part of this alchemy in Sunday’s home game at the PPG Paints Arena against rivals Washington Capitals.

DeSmith will make his first start of the season, while top goalkeeper Tristan Jarry will serve as a replacement.

During Friday’s 5-2 loss to the Flyers, DeSmith took over 11 minutes and 30 seconds for Jarry after Jarry scored three goals in six shots. DeSmith was sturdy in relief appearance as he made 12 parries on 13 shots.

In two games this season Jarry is 0: 2: 0 with 7.57 goals against the average and a saving of 0.727 percent.

During training at Cranberry on Saturday, DeSmith was hit by shots from the top power play unit while Jarry was working with the second unit.

« He just has to focus on the things he can control, » said Sullivan. « It’s his effort, his attitude, his ethics, his approach, his confidence, all of those things. We all believe in Tristan. We know he’s a good goalkeeper. He will have the opportunity to respond here and we believe that he will react correctly. He will be working with (goalkeeping coach Mike Buckley) on the way here to make sure, from a fundamental standpoint, that his fundamentals are where they need to be to give yourself the chance to succeed when the puck falls in games.

“Tristan is a good goalkeeper. We know that. We believe in him. This is a long season and we will just keep working the process with him.  »

DeSmith’s last start in the NHL was a 5-0 win over the Buffalo Sabers on March 14, 2019. He scored 26 saves in the shutout.

• Sullivan said striker Kasperi Kapanen has passed his final test for the NHL’s coronavirus protocol and is ready to join the team. He won’t be attending Sunday, however, as he hasn’t trained with the team since arriving in Pittsburgh on Jan. 9.

The Finnish Kapanen was unable to secure a work visa to enter the USA and was able to join the team for the training camp in good time. After entering the country, he had to undergo a seven-day quarantine, which included several tests, as required by the NHL.

Kapanen recently told Yle Uutiset, a Finnish news agency, that he applied for the visa in October but that it was not processed until the second week of January.

• This is the Penguins’ first game at the PPG Paints Arena since they were defeated 6-2 by the Carolina Hurricanes on March 8th.

• A familiar face will make his season debut for the capital cities today. Former Penguin striker Daniel Sprong is expected to pull in in place of Conor Sheary, another former Penguin striker. Sprong, 23, was the Penguins’ second round pick in 2015 and played for the team at the NHL level for three seasons before being sold to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for defender Marcus Pettersson in December 2018.

• The capitals are expected to launch Ilya Samsonov on the network. In one game this season he has a 1-0-0 record with 4.00 goals against the average and a saving of 0.846 percent.
