World news – Peter Malnati hopes accuracy paves the way to victory at Torrey Pines

SAN DIEGO – Peter Malnati had never made the cut in four previous starts at the Farmers Insurance Open, but the fifth time was a spell for the 33-year-old after rounds 66-71 which put him on eighth Place and two shots left the lead.

“Of course it’s a big, long golf course, that’s for sure. I wasn’t always a big, long batsman, but now it’s me that’s fun, « said Malnati.

Malnati’s ironic ideas about distance aside – he’s 145th in the season’s driving distance on the PGA Tour that from 166th last season – his thoughts on the South Course leave room for a medium-length player.

« When you look at people who have won here, it’s not always a huge success, » he said. « This golf course also rewards really hitting the ball, going straight to keep it in play, but that was something I knew was coming this week. »

Peter Malnati saw his young son for the first time since the pandemic at a PGA Tour event when he turned 63 in Bermuda.

Peter Malnati started off strong, shooting 7:65 on Friday at the Houston Open to take the lead after morning rain and lightning prevented round two from completing.

Peter Malnati leads the Houston Open but he may not finish as his wife is expecting the couple’s first child soon.
