Pietro Fittipaldi returns to the team with whom he made his NTT IndyCar Series debut three years ago to drive the Dale Coyne Racing No. 51 with RWR entry at all oval events in 2021.

Fittipaldi, with his former Haas F1 and current Dale Coyne Racing, will share the driving duties for the team’s number 51 Honda start throughout the season with RWR teammate Romain Grosjean, who will take part in all planned road and road races .

« I am very happy to be driving the ovals in car # 51 for Dale Coyne Racing with RWR this season, » said Fittipaldi, who continues his role as reserve driver for Haas F1. “I’m really looking forward to the Indianapolis 500. It has been a dream of mine since I was a kid to ride the Indy 500. All of Dale’s cars were competitive there last year and for the last few years, and we’re looking forward to doing the same this year.

« I’m also very happy to share the car with Romain. He’s a good friend of me. Over the years at Haas F1 we’ve become friends and it’s great to be teammates with him again, « continued the grandson of two-time Formula 1 world champion and two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Emerson Fittipaldi. 51 is the same number I used on my Formula 1 debut last year. So it’s a nice coincidence. « I’ve worked with some of the guys from Dale Coyne Racing in the past so I’m happy to work with them again. I’m sure we can do great things. I’m really looking forward to it ! «

Fittipaldi, who won the 2017 World Series Formula V8 3.5 crown, switched to DCR for the first time in 2018 for a partial season in which he competed in six races. The American-born Brazilian made his debut in Phoenix, where he finished an impressive 10th place in his series debut.

The 24-year-old was originally supposed to try to qualify for his first Indianapolis 500, but injuries he suffered In an accident at a World Endurance Championship in early May 2018, he was out of the race for a few months and ended his chance to do his first laps that year at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Fittipaldi returned later that season in the Mid-Ohio lap back into the cockpit and got his best result in the penultimate lap of this season in Portland with a ninth place.

“We really enjoyed working with Pietro in 2018. It’s unfortunate that his season was shorter than planned. So it’s great to give him another chance to do a few races in the NTT IndyCar series and that he has another chance to compete in the Indy 500 and fulfill one of his childhood dreams, ”said team owner Dale Coyne. « We are looking forward to having him share our # 51 start with his former Haas F1 team-mate Romain Grosjean. That gives us a strong line-up for our full-time entry. »

After his first outing at Dale Coyne Racing in 2018 Fittipaldi became the official test and reserve driver for Haas F1, which competed in the DTM series and the F3 Asian Championship. More recently, he made his Formula 1 debut last December with Haas F1 replacing Grosjean and took part in the final two laps of the season after Grosjean was injured.

Fittipaldi’s IndyCar season begins on May 1st and 2nd at the Texas Motor Speedway Doubleheader.
