Leading church services witnessed by only about 120 people in a side wing of St. Peter’s Basilica, and not the crowds that normally gather in front of the cathedral at the beginning of Holy Week, the Pope said after a year under the virus, the pressure grow.
« Last year we were shocked, » he said. « This year we are under more pressure and the economic crisis has become severe. » During his sermon and in comments afterwards in his traditional Sunday address, Francis said the pandemic has made it more important to take care of the poor and suffering .
« The devil is using the crisis to instill suspicion, despair and discord, » he said, adding that the pandemic has brought physical, psychological and spiritual suffering.
Palm Sunday is the first day Holy Week, the run-up to Easter, the most important day in the Christian calendar. The rest of the Pope’s services this week, including Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, will also include just a handful of the regular participants
