PREMIER Annastacia Palaszczuk has rejected the proposal of the Australian party Katter to introduce compensation for crime victims.
The KAP yesterday announced an extraordinary plan to give victims thousands of compensation for living in certain « hot spots ».
The system would provide standards for compensation rates for various crimes, such as $ 5,000 for victims of home and business burglaries.
Hotspots would be identified based on the area’s crime rate compared to the national average.
Ms. Palaszczuk said that some form of compensation « does not exist in any other jurisdiction » and that she could not bring politics into play.
Opposition police spokesman Dale Last said the policy had completely ignored the underlying issues that lead to systemic juvenile delinquency problems.
« All this does is pay the victims, and it’s not about the real problem of juvenile delinquency in this community, » said Last.
« Surely there are victims out there who are seriously injured as a result of a vehicle being stolen or their home being broken into. However, if they just get a check for being a crime victim, that problem won’t be solved. » in the longer term. »
The Burdekin MP said there had to be short, medium and long term goals to improve the lives of young offenders.
But KAP leader Robbie Katter said at least his party was trying to find a solution.
He said the two major parties had not worked out a print crime plan to deal with the situation in north Queensland.
Mr Katter said the government should not be « afraid » to implement a policy if the prime minister is « genuine » to address the problem.
He added that the three KAP directives – the resettlement sentence, longer prison sentences and the new compensation directive – work together to address the underlying and long-term problems related to crime.
