World news – PREPARATION TO LEAVE: A dangerous fire rages west of Tiaro

The fire from Glenbar Road is likely to hit St. Mary

QFES has warned that a dangerous fire is moving towards St. Mary west of Tiaro this afternoon.

As of 1:15 p.m., the fire was on its way from Glenbar Road towards St. Mary State Forest and likely had an impact on St. Mary at some point.

« You have to be ready to follow your bushfire survival plan. If you don’t have a plan or intend to leave, you should be ready to leave the area as the situation could get worse quickly, » the latest QFES update said .

« Firefighters are working to contain the fire, but firefighters may not be able to protect all property.

« People in the area will be affected by smoke, which affects visibility and air quality.

« Call Triple Zero (000) immediately if you think your property is under threat. »
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO:
• Listen to your local radio station or visit the Rural Fire Service (RFS) website for regular updates.
• If you have a bushfire survival plan, complete it now so you can follow it.
• If you do not have a bushfire survival plan or are planning to leave the area, indicate where you will go when you leave the area.
• Let family and friends know about your plan.
• Close windows and doors to minimize smoke exposure.
• If you have respiratory disease, keep your medicines close by.
• Drive carefully in poor visibility.
• Check with your neighbors to see if they need help preparing for the bushfire.
• Pack important documents and items (such as passports, birth certificates, prescription drugs, food and water, and protective clothing) with you in case you need to leave the area.
• Put on protective clothing (e.g. a long-sleeved cotton shirt, boots with thick soles).
• Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
• Bring pets; Keep them in place with a leash, cage, or in a safe space. and provide them with plenty of water.
• Take measures to protect your livestock.
• Move flammable materials such as floor mats, garbage cans, and patio furniture away from your home.
• Fill containers such as bathrooms, sinks and buckets with water so that you have access to drinking water and fire fighting water.
• Close windows and doors, and seal the gaps under doors and screens with wet towels to keep smoke out of the house.

Fireys were set up this morning on the site of a vegetation fire burning in Saint Mary west of Tiaro.

The Queensland Fire and Rescue Services said the fire was burning near Glenbar Road and headed northeast but did not pose an active threat to property in the area.

« The residents should keep windows and doors closed and keep medication nearby if they have respiratory problems, » said a QFES statement.

« Motorists should drive with caution and under certain conditions. If residents are concerned that their property is at risk, they are advised to call Triple-0 (000) immediately. »
