Purdue and Michigan are examples of a dwindling total of teams whose top scorer is a true low post player. Boilermakers ‘Trevion Williams and Wolverines’ Hunter Dickinson will meet on Friday in West Lafayette.
Both teams were reliable with 15.7 points and 7.5 rebounds per game from Dickinson and catapulted the Wolverines in the rebound rate ranks 11th in the country, while Purdue ranks 29th in this category and Williams contributes 15.4 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. Both of the leading rebounders only play in the post without taking a 3-point shot this season.
Purdue did a good job pushing things out. Opponents took 47 percent of their field goal attempts from the 3-point range, the seventh highest percentage in college basketball. Michigan ranks ninth among Division I teams in the 2-point shooting percentage at 59.1 percent. However, the Wolverines only do 30.8 percent of their 3-pointers in street games, which ranks 224th nationwide.
Purdue should have plenty of clean possessions as the Michigan defense has only 14.8 percent of the opponent’s possessions achieved a turnover that ranks 330th.
In real street games, opponents convert 40 percent of their 3s, which should result in Purdue Michigan giving one of its toughest tests of the season.
