World news – Residents will be hit by floods tonight when the river peaks


UPDATE 4:50 pm: The Condamine River is expected to peak at 7:00 pm tonight. Some residents are expected to be affected by floods.
The Southern Downs regional council said data from the Bureau of Meteorology suggests the river will peak at about 5 feet (5.75 m).
Door knocking has started in the affected areas.

Road closures continue across the region and people are reminded « if it is flooded, forget about it ».

EARLY: An urgent flood warning has been issued to residents of the Warwick area as total rainfall is putting the Condamine River in danger of overflowing.

The Bureau of Meteorology’s statement said a strong upper trough on Monday and Tuesday is likely to bring widespread areas of heavy rainfall and flooding to west and south Queensland.

The Condamine River basin was one of the areas under flood watch. The area was expected to receive widespread sums from 50mm to 70mm and heavier isolated sums from 100mm to 150mm during thunderstorms.

« In the next few days, slight to moderate flooding over rivers and streams is to be expected, with isolated areas with major flooding possible, » says the parts list declaration.

« Local flooding and disruptions in transportation are likely in the flood control area, particularly in southeast Queensland. »

The warning comes when Rose City residents receive more than 130mm of rain in just over 24 hours and at least 100mm of downpour on Tuesday.
