World news – Review and Highlights: # 1 Gonzaga drives past BYU, 86-69


Corey Kispert scored 23 points and Gonzaga # 1 used a strong first half to overtake BYU (86-69) on Thursday evening at the McCarthey Athletic Center in Spokane.

Gonzaga called in the first five minutes 16-2 lead and led 23-1 at halftime.

Point guard Jalen Suggs had 16 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals for Gonzaga (11-0, 2-0 West Coast Conference). Drew Timme and Andrew Nembhard added 12 points each.

Matt Haarms and Caleb Lohner scored 13 points each to speed BYU (9-3, 0-1). Cougars’ top scorer Alex Barcello (16.9 points per game) scored nine points in the 3-of-11 shootout.

Gonzaga extended his big lead at halftime by forcing BYU to turn 11 in the first half. The Cougars finished with 16 turnovers which the Zags converted to 25. BYU achieved only seven points from eight general contractor sales.

15:37 – Gonzaga 16, BYU 2: Drew Timme has six points, Corey Kispert has five, and the Bulldogs have an early 14 point lead.

The Zags scored the first eight points of the game and then ripped off another 8-0 run before BYU called the timeout.

Former top quarterback Jalen Suggs drops Joel Ayayi a cent for a touchdown.

10:43 – Gonzaga 30, BYU 7: The Zags continue to retreat from the Cougars behind sharp shots.

Gonzaga shoots 66.7% (12 of 18) and made three 3-pointers. Corey Kispert leads the Zags with nine points. Andrew Nembhard has six points in a 2-of-2 shooting from 3.

Drew Timme crashes the boards and ends a contested shot on the rim. Three BYU players were in the sophomore, but it didn’t seem to matter.

7:16 – Gonzaga 34, BYU 16: The big man from Cougars, Matt Haarms, has had some success inside when BYU retreated to 20 Zags.

Has Haarms seven points in 2-of-2 shooting and 3 out of 3 points from the free throw line.

Gonzaga center Drew Timme recorded his second foul. He has eight points and two rebounds.

4:00 – Gonzaga 39, BYU 26: A 7-0 run by the Cougars results in Gonzaga taking his first time out of the game.

BYU closes the deficit on 39-26, 3:58 left. Zags had three sales on this route and Cougars looks much better offensively.

Corey Kispert and Andrew Nembhard each have nine points to accelerate the Zags. Nembhard is 3 of 3 to 3 pointers.

Suggs has excellent vision in court. Knew where to go with the ball before the ride. Draws three defenders and smokes a pass to Nembhard in the corner. Easy.

Gonzaga 52, BYU 29: Corey Kispert has 11 points and the Bulldogs used two big runs to get a 23-point lead over the Cougars at halftime.

Gonzaga opened the game with a 16-2 run and retired after a 23-0 lead from BYU at the end of half with a 13-0 run.

Andrew Nembhard has nine points for Gonzaga at the 3-of -3 shooting from 3 point range added. Jalen Suggs, Joel Ayayi and Drew Timme each scored eight points.

Matt Haarms leads BYU with seven points, but the tall man is dealing with a sore left knee. Cougar’s top scorer Alex Barcello only has two points in the 5–1 shoot-out.

BYU turned the ball eleven times in the half, converting Gonzaga into 15 points. The Zags also have a 14-0 lead on fast break points.

Gonzaga shot 54.5% from the field and 50% from 3. BYU only made 33.3% of his shots and only 25% from 3 .

Suggs, the Zags freshman point guard, leads the team with four rebounds. He also has three assists and two steals.

Timme only played eight minutes when he missed the rest of the first half after picking up his second foul.

Zags 62-40, Kispert up to 15 Points, Timme and Suggs each with 10. Wages with 10 points from the bench for BYU and Backup Wing George with 6 points.

10:36 – Gonzaga 75, BYU 45: Corey Kispert has 21 points and the Zags have theirs The lead increased to 30 points.

Andrew Nembhard and Jalen Suggs each have 12 points and Drew Timme added 10 for Gonzaga. Nembhard made four 3-pointers.

7:25 – Gonzaga 75, BYU 50: The Cougars shortened the Bulldogs’ lead to 25 with a 7-0 run.

After Gonzaga had built his biggest lead , BYU made the run behind five points from Gideon George.

3:25 – Gonzaga 83, BYU 57: Corey Kispert has 23 points and the Zags take the lead by 26 points in the last three minutes of the game .

GU is 83-57 and 3:25 ahead of the bench. Kispert 23, Suggs 16, Timme 12.

Aaron Cook (leg injury) from GU goes through pregame and warm-up exercises. Former Zag Jesse Wade was not on the road with BYU.

Gonzaga is the only team in Division I with 4 players who average at least 10 PPG at 50% shooting (Corey Kispert, Drew Timme, Jalen Suggs, Joel Ayayi ).
Gonzaga currently shoots 55.4% as a team, the highest score in 10 games in a season since UCLA 2016-17.
