Riley Keough was trained to be a death doula eight months after her brother Benjamin Keough committed suicide.
The actress completed the Sacred Crossings Institute’s Art of Death Midwifery course in Los Angeles, which she unveiled on Instagram.
« We’re taught that it’s a sick topic to talk about. Or we were so scared that we couldn’t talk about it … then of course it happens to us and we are very poorly prepared, ”she wrote. « I think it is as important to be taught about conscious dying and death as we teach about birth and conscious birth. We prepare so rigorously for the entrance and have no preparation for our exit. »
A death doula or midwife is a person who provides assistance by “bringing deeper meaning and comfort to dying people and loved ones in the last days of life,” according to the International End of Life Doula Association.
Benjamin died in July In 2020 at his home in Calabasas, California, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was 27 years old.
A week after Benjamin’s death, Riley shared an emotional message on social media, writing, « Tomorrow is the hardest. Me forgot that you are gone. I can’t cry because I’m afraid I’ll never stop. A pain that is new to me. «
Lisa Marie remembered her son and part three months after his death lte at the time, “The depth of pain is suffocating and bottomless without you every moment of every day. I will never be the same again. Please wait for me, dear, and hold my hand while I stay to continue to protect and raise your little sisters and be here for Riley. I know you want that. “
