Mahalia Jackson, the well-known gospel singer and civil rights activist, certainly had a fascinating life that was perhaps too interesting to fit into an hour and a half film. What happens in Lifetime’s « Robin Roberts Presents: Mahalia » is that the film moves awkwardly from one stage in Mahalia’s life to the next. For example, there is literally a blink and you will miss showing a scene depicting Mahalia’s life as a housekeeper, which adds nothing to the film or our understanding of how this young girl really rose from deep poverty to be Mahalia Jackson to become. Danielle Brooks plays Mahalia, but while Danielle may have been brilliant in her role as « Taystee » in « Orange Is The New Black, » she leaves much to be desired in this performance. Danielle is also a hugely acclaimed stage actress, but sadly, her exaggerated expressions, which can work on stage, seem extremely presumptuous on screen.

This seems to most Actors of the film, most of whom are seasoned stage actors. Tony nominee Joaquina Kalukango, however, does a compelling job as Mahalia’s longtime pianist Mildred Falls, who isn’t afraid to assert himself against Mahalia’s controlling personality.
The film doesn’t shy away from showing that Mahalia, despite her many great virtues was far from perfect, although she expected perfection from others. In the film, Mahalia is portrayed in such a way that she lets her success go into her head. She is also accused by those closest to her of being far too judgmental about how they reflect on her. We also see that Mahalia tended to get lost in their rather unhappy relationships. Mahalia’s two husbands don’t focus that much on their deep friendship with Martin Luther King (Rob Demery) in the movie. The part of the movie that revolves around King is interesting, even if the actor who plays him often seems overwhelmed and portrays an icon who had so much influence and charisma.
We know King and Jackson were friends in real life, but it would be interesting to understand if the two had such a casual and easy relationship as the one portrayed in the movie. A friendship so close that Mahalia’s second husband is portrayed as jealous in the film. The film builds up until March in Washington in 1963, when Mahalia sang the gospel classic « I was beaten up and despised » in front of an audience of over 250,000 at the King’s request. But it wasn’t just her voice that Mahalia contributed that day. Mahalia helped steer the story by urging King to tell them about the dream, making the “I have a dream” speech a reality.
It is not surprising that the film Mahalia, with its so intertwined places in history, shows utterly devastated when her friend and spiritual mentor King is murdered. This is the part of the film that really gives you goosebumps and tears as we see real-life footage of the grief after King’s death. It also serves as an awakening in the film to get Mahalia to apologize to those she has estranged. Another scene that gets the waterworks going is the one in which Mahalia turns to her old friend and pianist Mildred, from whom she had distanced herself for years. She finds Mildred crippled with arthritis and unable to play the piano. Mahalia then takes them to church, where they first met, and starts singing. Inspired by the sense of community around her, Mildred accompanies Mahalia one last time on the piano. At a moment when the film closes for the film, now when she was a young girl, people crowd the streets in front of the door and listen to Mahalia sing. The film doesn’t focus on Mahalia’s later years plagued by illness, but rather leaves her fans at a high level. « Robin Roberts Presents: Mahalia » premiered on April 3rd at 8pm on Lifetime.
