Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has attacked CBS’s longtime news magazine ’60 Minutes’ after it reportedly misleading its interaction with reporter Sharyn Alfonsi. The Sunshine State governor accused the television show of creating a « political narrative » about his handling of the introduction of the Covid-19 vaccine. DeSantis appeared in « Tucker Carlson Tonight, » where he claimed that CBS edited key portions of his interview with Alfonsi in which he was answering her questions about Publix. The journalist accused him of granting the supermarket company exclusive rights to distribute vaccines in Palm Beach County in return for a US $ 100,000 political donation.

DeSantis angrily said that ’60 Minutes’ removed the crucial part of the interaction when putting the topic in context. He told Carlson, “[What] is lost in this is that we have now vaccinated 3.5 million seniors. We’re the first state to say we do seniors first. We will not follow the recommendation of the CDC. What we did worked. They didn’t want to discuss that. Obviously, they selectively edited the background. You tried to act like there was a conspiracy with Publix. «
The 42-year-old added, » They ignored the fact that I met with the county mayor who is a Democrat and said what ’60 minutes’ did is bunk. They didn’t tell you we were doing African American church trips before Publix fired a single shot. They didn’t tell you that hospitals start recording from the third week of December – because it doesn’t fit the narrative. They don’t believe in facts. It was a political story. “A Daily Wire report detailed what CBS released after the DeSantis-Alfonsi exchange a few weeks ago. When the CBS reporter attempted to imply that the Florida governor was giving Publix a contract to conduct vaccinations for money, DeSantis immediately denied it, calling it a « false story. » Much of his answer, however, was not included in the program. The exuberant words were, “When we did this, CVS and Walgreens were the first pharmacies to have it. And they had a long term care mission. So they went to the long term care facilities. They got the vaccine in mid-December and went to long-term care facilities the third week of December to do LTCs. So that was their mission. That was very important. And we trusted them to do that. When we got in January, we wanted to expand the distribution points. So, yeah, you had the counties, you had some transit places, you had hospitals that did a lot, but we wanted to get it into the communities more. So we reached out to other retail pharmacies – Publix, Walmart – obviously CVS and Walgreens had to end that mission. And we said we will use you as soon as you are done with it. For Publix, they were the first to raise their hand and say they were ready to go. And you know what? We did it on a trial basis. I had three counties. I actually showed up this weekend and spoke to seniors from four different Publix countries. How was the experience Is it good? Should you think this is a good way to go? And it was 100% positive. So we expanded it and then people liked it. And I can tell you, if you look at a place like Palm Beach County, they initially had issues with the senior numbers. «
DeSantis’ response to Alfonsi added, » They [Palm Beach County authorities] have calculated that 90% of their seniors live within a mile and a half of a Publix. So we did that and in the end you had 65 Publix in Palm Beach. Palm Beach is one of the largest counties, one of the oldest counties. We employed nearly 75% of the seniors in Palm Beach. The reason for this is that you have a strong retail presence. So our path was varied. It worked. And we’re also now significantly expanding CVS and Walgreens after completing the long-term care mission. «
The Democratic Director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management Jared Moskowitz and the Democratic Mayor of Palm Beach County Dave Kerner supported the governor and said no one in DeSantis’ office had proposed a partnership with Publix.
Publix also issued a statement criticizing the claim without mentioning « 60 minutes » by name. « The irresponsible suggestion that there is a connection between the campaign contributions to Governor DeSantis and our willingness to contact other pharmacies Joining in to aid government vaccine distribution efforts is absolutely wrong and offensive, « Publix said on Monday.
