Chadwick Boseman made history in the SAG Awards by winning four SAG nominations in a single year, including nods for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and Da 5 Bloods.
Chadwick Boseman received two posthumous nominations from the 27th Screen Actors Guild Awards on Thursday, while Korean-American family drama Minari and Spike Lee’s Vietnam veteran drama Da 5 Bloods were among the nominations for Best Cast.
The nominees announced on Instagram Live differed in particular from the Golden Globe nominations announced the day before. While the Hollywood Foreign Press Association rejected films with mostly non-white actors in their top awards, the Actors Guild nominated a strikingly more diverse list of nominees for their top award, the best ensemble.
The best ensemble is Regina Kings One Night in Miami, a 1964 meeting of four black icons; the August Wilson adaptation of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom; Lee Isaac Chung’s Minari; Lee’s Da 5 Bloods and Aaron Sorkins 1960 courtroom drama The Trial of the Chicago 7.
All of these films, with the exception of Sorkins, were overlooked by the Globes in their Best Award, Best Dramatic Film, on Wednesday. Minari, who plays in Arkansas but mostly conducts Korean dialogue, was even not accepted into the category by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
The SAG Awards given by SAG-AFTRA are considered a far better barometer for the Academy Awards where actors make up the majority of the academy. Usually, the eventual Oscar Best Picture winner is nominated first for best ensemble by the SAG Awards, although Green Book and The Shape of Water were two exceptions. Last year, Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite won the SAG’s top award (and was the first non-English film to do so) before triumphing at the Oscars. The Screen Actors Guild cast nominee field left two Front runner in David Fincher’s Hollywood drama Mank (which topped the Globes with six nominations) and Chloe Zhao’s western road movie Nomadland. The stars of each – Gary Oldman in Mank, Frances McDormand in Nomadland – were both nominated by the Actors’ Guild.
Boseman, who died last August at the age of 43, was not only named for his lead role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom nominated, but also for his supporting role in Da 5 Bloods. With two individual nominations and two ensemble nods, Bosemans set a record for four SAG nominations in a single year – and a new one for film categories only.
In 2019, he memorably received the SAG Ensemble Award for Black Panther. « We all know what it’s like to be told there’s no place to be introduced – but you’re young, talented and black, » Boseman said then.
Were next to Boseman and Oldman Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal), Anthony Hopkins (The Father) and Steven Yeun (Minari) the nominees for Best Male Actor in a Leading Role.
Viola Davis, Boseman’s Ma Rainey co-star, was next to McDormand, Carey Mulligan (Promising Young Woman), Amy Adams (Hillbilly Elegy) and Vanessa Kirby (Pieces of a Woman) nominated for Best Female Actress in a Leading Role.
Maria Bakalova (Borat Subsequent Movie), Glenn Close (Hillbilly Elegy) , Olivia Colman (The Father), Yuh-Jung Young (Minari) and Helena Zengel (News of the World) were nominated for Best Supporting Female Actress.
The other nominations for male actors were Daniel Kaluuya (Judas and the black Messiah), Sacha Baron Cohen (The Pr ozess versus Chicago 7), Jared Leto (The Little Things), and Leslie Odom Jr. (One Night in Miami).
Directed in an already recurring theme for a movie year when many theaters were often closed due to the pandemic Netflix all studios. There were a total of 30 nominees, about three times the closest competitor.
The Crown, Schitt’s Creek and Ozark dominated the television categories. All of the female leads in a drama series nomination were from either The Crown (Gillian Anderson, Colman, Emma Corrin) or Ozark (Laura Linney, Julia Garner).
Both series were co-starred with Better Call Saul, Bridgerton and Lovecraft Country for best TV drama ensemble nominated.
Annie Murphy, Catherine O’Hara, Eugene Levy and Daniel Levy were all nominated for Schitt’s Creek. The other nominees for Best Comedy Series Company were Dead to Me, The Flight Attendant, The Great, and Ted Lasso.
The Actors Guild also helped atone for one of the Globes’ other blatant oversights, nominating Michaela Coel for theirs Appearance in the limited series I May Destroy You.
The SAG Awards will be held almost three months later this year, on April 4th. After the SAGs were postponed to March 14th due to the pandemic, they moved again when the Grammy Awards also occupied that date. The Oscars won’t be held until April 28th. The Oscar nominations, which will be announced March 15, are more than five weeks away.
The nominations were first streamed on Instagram on Thursday, with Daveed Diggs and Lily Collins as hosts. At first, Diggs struggled to sit on his screen with Collins.
It also meant Diggs was live when Collins announced his nomination for best male actor in a television movie or limited series for the movie version of Hamilton. He replied that the awards were « clearly manipulated ».
