World news – Simon expects Mariners to return to his best in his 200th game against City

Matt Simon believes the Central Coast Mariners will continue to hold their own against the "big teams" as the veteran striker prepares to wear the Yellow and Navy jersey for the 200th A-League against Melbourne City .

Simon lifted the premiers plate in his second season as a senior at Gosford in 2007/08, and the 35-year-old has played 199 competitive games in three spells, both sides moving to K-League club Jeonnam Dragons and Sydney FC, ahead of their milestone game at Central Coast Stadium on Wednesday.

Alen Stajcic’s team have shocked the A-League this season. She moved from wooden spoons to front runners in 2019/20 after winning three of her first five games, including away wins against newcomer Macarthur FC and defending Premiers and Champions, Sydney FC.

The Mariners slipped after a 1-2 Home loss to Wellington Phoenix on Sunday from the top of the rankings. After three games within 12 days, Mariners captain Simon barely had a moment to think about his career at the Central Coast before celebrating his final performance.

« It feels good. I didn’t have much time to think about it, » said the club’s all-time high scorer.

« Of course I’m looking forward to playing my 200th game in front of family and friends. »
