MIAMI – Top ranked Ash Barty made it to the fourth round of the Miami Open by beating Jelena Ostapenko 6-3 and 6-2 on Saturday.

Barty had it much easier than in the preliminary round when she saved a match point to beat Kristina Kucova qualifying. That was Barty’s first match outside of her Australian homeland since February 2020.

She kept Ostapenko moving and on the defensive, drawing her in and moving her from side to side.

Barty is the defending champion as the winner of 2019. The tournament was canceled last year at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.

Her possible path to the final became easier when the number 3 seeded Simona Halep struggled with an injury to her right shoulder before her match in the third round retired.

« I wanted to come here to do my best and play a lot of games, but unfortunately I can’t, » Halep said in a statement.

Halep scored her 400th career win with a comeback Victory against Caroline Garcia in the second round. She was supposed to meet Anastasija Sevastova, who advanced to the fourth round.
