This Sunday will be the first since Labor Day weekend without an NFL game breaking a sweat. But fear not, college hoops have you covered with an AAC matchup between SMU and # 6 Houston starting at 1 p.m. EST. The Cougars (14-1, 9-1 AAC) have won seven straight wins, while the Mustangs (9-3, 5-3 AAC) saved a split in their home and home series last time with Memphis. Cameron Tyson rarely prevailed against Tulane, hitting a career high of 31, including nine 3-balls. Tramon Mark scored 16 points, Justin Gorham 15 boards. Houston dominated from start to finish, building a 20-point lead before the game was 10 minutes old.

According to head coach Kelvin Sampson, Grimes will be « sure » back for the matchup against SMU as the Cougars are eighth Track victory in a row. The Junior Guard averages 17.6 points per game and is one of only two Houston players to average double digit points per game.

Offense is certainly not the calling card of the Cougars, but they still score a respectable 74, 4 points per game and an effective shooting rate of 49.1%.

Seth Davis of CBS on @UHCougarMBK: « Kelvin Sampson on the shortlist for national coach of the year … you could lead the table, maybe play a game to reach number 1. If they go to the selection show with a loss.  » a chance at a 1 seed. «

Defense and ricochets are key to your game as they keep your opponents at just 56.5 points per game, the lowest mark in all college basketball. Only two programs get enemy shooters a lower percentage of field targets , and Houston ranks sixth in the country when it comes to recovery.

The SMU scored a two-point win in their last game against Memphis despite receiving just 6 points from top scorer Kendric Davis. 11-Junior was 2-of-13 off the ground, but teammates Feron Hunt (17 points) and Emmanuel Bandoumel (15 points) picked up the gap.

The Mustangs are in first place among the AAC teams In terms of points per game and field goal percentage, while only two conference opponents get a higher percentage from a distance and more assists per game.

You did a good job defensively in the conference game and enemy shooters 41.5% off the field held, but fought on the glass. They rank eighth among 10 AAC teams that have recovered overall and were abused in that department at their only meeting with Houston this season.

The Cougars recovered from the SMU 45-32 earlier this month and grabbed a whopping 18 offensive boards. This dominance in the offensive glass resulted in 15 Houston points, which made the difference to a 74-60 win.

The Cougars could easily hold their own as a 2-point favorite on the road and have been in all but the games since then one of their six games beat the spread. Houston is 11-5 ATS this season and 8-2 ATS against conference opponents. They beat the number in six of nine home games, keeping every opponent under 68 points and all but five under 60 points.

SMU, on the other hand, is 5-6-1 ATS and 2-5-1 ATS against AAC opposition . I like the Cougars’ chances of resuming their formidable ATS run, especially since Grimes will be back on the ground.
