The UFC will close a bantamweight main event between former champion Cody Garbrandt and Rob Font in May, multiple sources told ESPN on Thursday.
Contracts haven’t been signed yet, but the 135-pound fight will conclude the UFC Fight Night on May 22nd upon completion. The UFC has not announced an official venue.
Garbrandt (12-3) put down a sensational one-punch knockout against Raphael Assuncao last summer. He was supposed to lose weight and challenge Deiveson Figueiredo for the UFC flyweight championship in November, but had to retire from the fight for health reasons.
Figueiredo is now involved in a title fight rematch against Brandon Moreno in June. These two fought for a draw in December. Garbrandt hasn’t given up on his plans to drop to 125 pounds but will focus on 135 pounds for now.
Font (18-4) rose to the UFC bantamweight division after a round of 16 against Marlon Moraes in December. The Boston native has three wins and wins against Moraes, Ricky Simon and Sergio Pettis.
