BMW Team RLL driver Bruno Spengler has refuted the blame for the bizarre 2021 Daytona 24 Hours Startline crash, for which he was punished by the stewards.

The # 25 BMW M8 GTE of the 2012 DTM champion crashed into Kevin Estre’s WeatherTech Racing Proton Competition Porsche 911 RSR-19 as the field neared the grid to pick up the green flag.

Estre turned and tagged Alessandro Pier Guidi’s Risi Competitzione Ferrari, causing chaos as GTD cars followed scattered to avoid the spinning Porsche.

Estre continued trailing the rear body until it finally fell off at Turn 6, requiring the first caution of the race to clear up the debris. The car then spent a long distance in the pits doing repairs on the front and back, while Spengler received a drive-through penalty.

« It was very difficult to understand what happened because it was green, everyone in full swing Accelerated and the car in front of me wasn’t really driving, « he said.

» I don’t know if he had a problem or what. I tried to avoid him, but when I tried I got the heck his car cut off slightly and it was enough to turn him around.

« I don’t know if he had a problem why his car wasn’t going on the green, he even tapped the brake lights lightly so he wasn’t in the correct order because everyone else went but him so I hit him.

« I tried to avoid it but it was impossible, there was nothing I could do to avoid a collision with all the other cars driving.

« It was a strange incident and I think the punishment was great hard – because there was nothing I could have done to avoid it – but we’re back on the leading lap so it could have been worse, let’s say. «

He tweeted, » I can’t believe it! We lost the race before it even started … I was waiting for the pole sitter to come to power there and the BMW just went full throttle without looking ahead! Incredible. «

The five remaining GTLM cars are all still in the lead with 21 hours to go. Corvette Racing pair Nick Tandy and Jordan Taylor are leading Jesse Krohn’s # 24 BMW after Risis James Calado in Performance Motorsports LMP3 Ligier shot by Cameron took Kasseln at the bus stop.

The race is currently being led directly by the JDC Miller Motorsports Cadillac by Tristan Vautier, with Ricky Taylor second in the Wayne Taylor Motorsport Acura and Kevin Magnussen third in the Cadillac from Chip Ganassi Racing .
