Nepalese Hindu women stand in line to enter Pashupatinath Temple and say prayers for their husbands during the Teej Festival celebrations in Kathmandu.
KATHMANDU: Over 5 lakh- Supporters, including thousands from India, crowded into the legendary Pashupatinath Temple here in Nepal on Thursday for Maha Shivaratri.
The pilgrims were evenly spaced in the queues, putting on masks and disinfecting hands were mandatory.
« Arrangements were made so that visitors could see the presiding deity within half an hour, » the officer said.
Authorities said the temple gates would open at 4 a.m. until about About 5 lakh steps were recorded in the evening.
The number will increase as the temple welcomes devotees late into the night. The visiting devotees were mainly Hindus from Nepal and India.
Groups of sadhus who had traveled from India on the occasion were provided with « prasadam » and accommodation, the official said.
The Pashupatinath Temple is the largest temple complex in Nepal and stretches on both sides of the Bagmati River. Thousands of believers come from Nepal and India every day.
The entry of devotees into the temple area was banned for nine months last year due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
