One of the greatest mysterious sites in the United States is the Hotel Cecil. The historic Los Angeles landmark was built in 1924, just a few years before the Great Depression. In the following years the hotel got into difficult times and became a place for suicides and violent murders. The most recent death was a 21-year-old student, Elisa Lam, who disappeared on January 31, 2013.
Lam, also known by her Cantonese name, Lam Ho Yi, was the daughter of immigrants from Hong Kong and had hated less before then Stayed at the hotel for more than a week. Her body was discovered a few weeks later on February 19th. To this day, Lam’s death remains unsolved and whatever information was available would only make the case more curious. Lam was a student at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, although it wasn’t registered in early 2013. She traveled solo on Amtrak and Intercity buses for her trip to California. In California, she visited the San Diego Zoo and posted photos on social media. She arrived in Los Angeles on January 26th.
Two days later, she checked into the Cecil Hotel. While she was originally assigned a shared hostel-style room on the fifth floor of the hotel, she was moved to a separate room for two days when her roommates complained about « certain strange behaviors », according to the hotel’s lawyer.
As Lam Failed to contact her parents on Jan. 31, her parents contacted the Los Angeles Police Department. The police searched the hotel but couldn’t find them. Things got stranger when the police released surveillance footage from an elevator in the hotel where Lam was behaving erratically. The pixelated footage shows Lam stepping into the elevator and pressing all the floor buttons. She gets in and out of the elevator and sticks her head sideways in the direction of the hotel corridors. You can also see her getting on and off and at one point moving into the corner as if she was hiding in the elevator.
Katie Orphan, owner of The Last Bookstore, was one of the last people she was alive have seen. She told CBS LA that she remembered the student buying books and music for her family and said, « It seemed like [Lam] had plans to go back home, give things to family members and be with them again Lam’s body was discovered on February 19 by maintenance worker Santiago Lopez, who was inspecting the hotel’s water tanks after complaints from residents about low water pressure and a strange taste in tap water. Lam’s body floated naked with her clothes and belongings.
The autopsy report on Lam’s body only raised further questions. The drugs she was prescribed included drugs for ADHD and bipolar disorder (which she was diagnosed with), mood stabilizers, antipsychotics, and antidepressants. The toxicological report on Lam showed that she had consumed a number of drugs. However, there was no evidence of alcohol or illegal substances in her body. Another summary showed that she had taken at least one antidepressant that day, had recently taken her second antidepressant and mood stabilizer, but not that day, and that she had recently not taken her antipsychotic.
According to reports, it would be for Lam found it difficult to climb to the water tank on his own.
