« Only I know what songs I wrote that almost made the Fearless album, » said Taylor. « Songs that I adored but that were withheld for various reasons. »
« This process was more fulfilling and emotional than I could have imagined, and made me even more determined to re-record all of my old music » , Taylor concluded her post.
« I hope you enjoy this first excursion as much as I loved traveling back in time to create it. »
And of course, that date is an Easter egg for himself – the ninth day of the fourth month results in Taylor’s lucky number 13.
The announcement followed a very public battle between Taylor and her former record label Big Machine after its founder Scott Borchetta took over the company – and with it the master recordings of Taylor’s first six albums – sold to Scooter Braun’s company Ithaca Holdings.
In a lengthy post on her Tumblr account, Taylor wrote that she had decided not to sign with Big Machine again after the end of the contract because she had Borchetta’s plans to sell the label were aware and her future would be uncertain – but she never dreamed he would sell it to Braun.
Taylor called the deal her « worst nightmare » and claimed she had « ceaseless, manipulative » for years Bullying « witnessed » by Braun and his celebrity clients, which included Kanye West and Justin Bieber.
Braun and Big Machine’s ownership of Taylor’s Masters is significant as it means that both he and the company benefit every time when their music is used or streamed, and that both of them have to give permission for every licensing.
« It’s something I’m really excited about because my contract says that from November 2020 – so next year – can record one to five albums again, « she said a few days later during an appearance on Good Morning America.
(Reputation, Taylor’s sixth album, cannot be re-recorded yet, probably due to an a General clause in contracts that says music cannot be re-recorded until five years after its original release.)
