Tesla’s Full Self Driving (FSD) Beta V9.0 will go live soon. As a .0 update, this means that it is an important one. This update is moving to pure vision, and Elon Musk just posted on Twitter that there will indeed be « massive » improvements. This update from Elon Musk came in the form of a reply to @WholeMarsBlog who posted another video of their current version of FSD Beta. « You’ll love trying your own car, » he noted.
Almost done with FSD Beta V9.0. The step change improvement is massive, especially in weird corner cases with bad weather in &. Visibility only, no radar.
Elon added that the update will help the system handle weird corner cases and bad weather much better. Owen Sparks asked a follow-up question about removing the radar from production or as a backup. Elon confirmed that it will be removed. This will of course reduce vehicle costs a little.
While this seems like big news, it is actually not news. This isn’t the first time Elon has spoken about Tesla not going to use radar as a vision supplement. Dr. Know-it-alls know all of this in his YouTube video last month when he realized that most of the media hadn’t picked up on the topic. x only of limited value. I hope to be able to upload the & button V9.0 next month, « last month.
Presumably the many Tesla owners who have been waiting for this button with the V9.0 update are the « Almost done », very happy so that anyone in the US who has bought FSD can download the vastly improved system.
The other tweet Dr. Know It All brought was one that Elon shared on March 12th:

I haven’t seen any article discussing the fact that there were no accidents with FSD Beta – great news. Every accident with Tesla is in the news and portrayed as if it was Tesla’s own fault. Hence, the fact that there have been no accidents with FSD Beta to date should be considered a great thing.
However, this did not blow the doctor away. It was the last part of Elon’s tweet that related to pure vision without radar and the path to real AI. “It really seems like nobody paid any attention. He says that they remove everything but vision for the AI systems, ”emphasized the doctor in his video.
All others develop themselves with expensive LIDAR. Tesla uses inexpensive cameras and RADAR. Now the artificial intelligence is so good that no RADAR is needed. The world will change with the next FSD update. https://t.co/1pHwrMOhnF
He noted that he would be hoping Tesla would keep Radar as a backup, but pointed out that it sounded like Tesla was just going all-in on Vision. From Elon’s response to Owen, it is clear that Tesla does just that. This just shows how far the AI has advanced. It’s so advanced that Tesla is using it for its FSD software with much less hardware than previously thought possible – even by Elon Musk.
