Shut down

Lennon, who returned to the club for a second stint after Brendan Rodgers moved to Leicester in February 2019, has been under pressure all season but previously claimed he would not give up.

The reigning champions are 18 points behind Rangers in the top division and a loss to Ross County on Sunday left their rivals in Glasgow just seven points away from the title.

Lennon apologized for « abandoning the fans » after the loss to Ross County abandoned Celtic’s bid to win a tenth straight title in disarray.

The defeat also increased the likelihood that Rangers would claim the title at Parkhead on March 21st.

Since returning to the club, Lennon has taken Celtic to two titles, two Scottish cups and one league cup.

A statement from the club said: « The Celtic Football Club announced today that Neil Lennon has resigned from his position as football manager with immediate effect.

» Neil has been with the club both as a player and as a Served manager with distinction and achieved numerous successes, most recently in December.

« In his second period as Celtic manager, he has five trophies to complement his three league titles and two Scottish Cup wins in his first period as manager. »

Lennon said in a statement: « We have had a difficult season due to so many factors and of course it is very frustrating and disappointing that we have not been able to reach the same heights as before. »

« I’ve worked as hard as ever to turn things around, but unfortunately we haven’t been able to get the kind of run going that we needed.

» I always do my best for the association and was proud to deliver cutlery to the Celtic devotees. The club will always be a part of me. I will always be a Celtic supporter myself and I will always want the best for Celtic. «

» I would like to thank so many people in the club who have given me so much, and I also want to thank my family for theirs Thank you love and support. I wish all the Celtic supporters, players, staff and directors success for the future. «

Peter Lawwell, CEO of Celtic, said: » I would like to pay tribute to Neil for everything he has done for the club during his second term. He has earned our eighth and ninth consecutive titles, four times as much, and has won the last five available national trophies. «

» Neil was and always is a true Celtic man and someone I will always treasure.

« I’ve seen Neil fight many battles on and off the field for many years with a courage and tenacity few could match. Even this season he’s fought so hard and tirelessly worked to turn things around.

« While this season has not gone as we would have liked, it cannot compromise the character or integrity of a man who has given so much to the club.

« Personally, it is a sad day for me to see Neil leave the club. Neil is a man of quality and decency, someone who will always be part of the Celtic fabric and who will always be welcome at Celtic Park will.

« On behalf of all members of the club and personally, I would like to thank Neil for his work as our manager, and I wish him and his family good health and continued success in everything they do. »

Celtic’s major shareholder Dermot Desmond added: « Neil is a Celtic legend as both a player and a manager. He has given so much to the club and with his success over the past few years – including winning a triple in his own right – he will be very difficult to replace.

« We sincerely thank Neil for everything he has done for the club and wish him every success in the future. »

LIVERPOOL has had a fight for the Premier League top 4 for the past few weeks – and I suspect they are on the right track to losing it.
