For a century, graffiti was considered the scream of a critic who was offended by the « abnormality » of Edvard Munch’s art.
However, a conservation project on The Scream has confirmed that Munch penciled himself in on his most famous painting « Could only have been painted by a madman ».
The infrared scanning of the first painted version of the artwork showed a match between the tiny lettering and the documents of the Norwegian artist.
« I would prefer it now as an inscription and not as graffiti, « said Mai Britt Guleng, curator at the Norwegian National Museum.
The version of the museum, one of four, was painted in 1893 and exhibited in Oslo two years later.
