DOOM Eternal: The Ancient Gods is a fantastic expansion for one of the best games of 2020, the faster one , crazier fights as well as new enemies and weapons. However, the plot, especially the ending of Part 2, needs some explanation.

It’s not that the plot is bad per se, just that it over-complicates things with a lot of background information that you can find in the Codex and by reading between the Need to figure out lines. A bad guy will mention someone, something, or somewhere and then just leave it up to you to figure out what they mean. This makes DOOM Eternal a much deeper game in terms of lore than its 2016 predecessor, although it suffers from the fact that it’s clearly not the focus of getting all of the story points right together. It stings demons in the head.

So who is the Dark Lord? What does he mean by his big twist? How does he look like Doomguy? Here is the story, ending, and characters of DOOM Eternal: The Ancient Gods explained.

At the end of DOOM Eternal: The Ancient Gods – Part Two, Davoth (Hell’s first Dark Lord) reveals that he is the creator of everything, including The Father and Doomguy (aka The Slayer and Doom Slayer) , i.e. you), and is basically the god of the DOOM world. This contradicts an earlier revelation in which it was revealed that the Father is the Creator of everything and Davoth.

It is basically God and the Devil that have been turned upside down. In truth, it’s a strange, somewhat unnecessary, twist.

After creating all of reality, Davoth wanted all of his motifs and creations to become immortal. Davoth could not figure out how and then created the father who betrayed him, stole his power and confined him to his own realm, Jekkad. Davoth’s anger caused Jekkad to become dark and twisted and his anger turned it to Hell.

The father then created the Maykrs and Urdak, which are basically Heaven and in which the Khan Maykr before the events of DOOM Eternal ruled. Samur Makyr (also known as Serarphim) acted as the father’s chancellor and later as the keeper of fate Slayer (Doomguy). Shortly before the events of the last games, the father inhabited the VEGA AI and Samur Maykr became Samuel Hayden, effectively keeping an eye on humanity’s understanding of Argent Energy and Earth’s readiness against the invading forces of Hell.

Davoth and the father fought to prevent Davoth’s forces from continuing to escape Hell to wreak havoc. The father was forced to act, confronted and defeated Davoth in hell and tore the sphere of his life out of his body. Instead of destroying it and killing Davoth once and for all, the father instead kept the sphere in the Temple of Souls beside him after the father decided to withdraw from rulership, tired of all the conflict.

Though Davoth Disembodied, he can spread his influence on Urdak and slowly drive the Khan Maykr insane before convincing Samur Maykr to place Doomguy – who fought the forces of Hell in the original DOOM games before he settled in Argent D’Nur and later as the leader of the Night Sentinels – into the Divinity Machine, which gives him Davoth’s superhuman strength and abilities. Davoth’s intention had been for Doom Slayer to finally destroy the Maykrs, the father, Urdak and all of his enemies before Davoth could later dispatch him unhindered, but unfortunately Doomguy is no idiot for Davoth.

The hunter later destroys the sphere of life of the father before he retrieves Davoth’s sphere and puts it in the luminarium to revive him, presumably to finish off Davoth once and for all. It is unclear why the hunter didn’t just destroy the sphere of life, maybe he just wanted a fight.

After Doomguy resuscitates him at the end of Part 1, he defeats Davoth in Immora in Hell in Part 2 with the help of the remaining night watchmen, including Valen, the traitor, and kills all remaining demons outside of Hell. Doomguy falls over before being placed in a sarcophagus by the father and the Maykrs and then left in the Temple of Souls, the place where Davoth’s sphere of life was held for a while.

Doomguy is not dead at the end of The Ancient Gods. DOOM Eternal is also not a prequel and there are no time loops. Instead, he is in a comatose state. It’s not clear if Doomguy lost his power after Davoth’s sphere of life was finally destroyed, but Davoth’s death affected Doomguy in some way.

Based on the message displayed on the screen at the end of the DLC, Corrax Entry 7:17, Doomguy is ready to be called when the next Dark Lord or a new threat from Hell shows up:

“So you go forever through the shadow areas and stand against evil, where everyone else is shaken. May your thirst for retribution never quench, may the blood never dry on your sword, and may we never need you again. “

This runs parallel to a message from DOOM 2016 in which Doomguy awoke from another sarcophagus on Mars after being held back for a long time after previous conquests. After battling the forces of Hell as one of the few remaining members of The Night Sentinels and being betrayed by Valen, he is eventually neutralized when an entire building falls on him and his Sentinel armor, locked in the sarcophagus that falls on him, is removed at you can see the start of DOOM 2016, which Samuel Hayden (Seraphim / Samur) found while searching for artifacts in the user account control.

Davoth wasn’t the only Dark Lord, just the first. With Davoth dead once and for all, it is likely that the remains of the Maykrs and / or the father will attempt to create a new Dark Lord to rule Hell. Doomguy can be their insurance plan in case the new Dark Lord gets any ideas.

In a new DOOM game, Doomguy can also fight the father who may twist over time, especially without his sphere of life. He could even try to forge his sphere of life anew and give him back his body. Whatever the case, this is certainly not the end of Doomguy and the broader DOOM franchise.

This is never properly explained. Doomguy was born on earth, far beyond Davoth’s influence, so Davoth could hardly have created a flawless performance or anything like that.

In some Codex entries it was shown that Davoth looked similar to Doomguy before he was even resurrected . It could be that Davoth was only « destined » to take the form of someone who raised him from the dead, but this could be a stretch.

The only « logical » explanation is that Doomguy from the Father was created to oppose Davoth directly, though this is only speculation. Any other explanation will just be far too tedious. The father even says at the end of the first part that Davoth Doomguy is in Hell, but again this is not investigated further.
