Aidy Boothroyd has asked Todd Cantwell to prove him wrong after the England U21 boss removed the Norwich City midfielder from the squad for the upcoming European Championship.

The Dereham-born midfielder is on Standby list but many were expecting him to join the squad after his recent form helped give City a 10 point lead at the top of the championship.

Cantwell has scored five goals and four this season Assists registered for the Canary Islands, including a stunning goal that won against Sheffield Wednesday in Hillsborough on Sunday.

Town duo Max Aarons and Oliver Skipp were selected by Boothroyd for the group stage of the competition later that month. Strikers like Callum Hudson-Odoi of Chelsea and Mason Greenwood of Manchester United, both capped at senior level, made the cut ahead of the Canary Islands midfielder.

Cantwell was capped three times by the U21s and made his debut at 3-0 in 2019 Victory against Kosovo at KC Stadium.

England U21s travel to Slovenia this month to launch their European Championship campaign after the tournament was postponed last year. Despite being 23 years old, Cantwell was able to qualify for the competition because he was under the required age at the start of qualifying.

Boothroyd chose to name a number of midfielders ahead of Cantwell, but described the decision as one of the toughest to make in finalizing his 23-man squad.

« When you look at the squad It’s a tough call, I found it particularly difficult to make a decision, « Boothroyd admitted.

» Mainly because of the post-Christmas shape, the upswing was in terms of his minutes, numbers and Norwichs Position – they play very well – a difficult decision. You are close to the end of a very long season at the top of the league.

« Todd has been with us before. He was excellent when he was with us. I know how important it is for him to play for his country. Football is about hard hits and setbacks. Life is about and you have to get it. « Go ahead and come back to where you want to be.
