The legendary former Temple University basketball coach, John Chaney, died on January 29, 2021, as Mike Jensen of the Philadelphia Inquirer first reported. He was 89 years old.
While coaching the Temple University basketball team, he won a total of 741 career games, took the team to the NCAA tournament 17 times, and reached the Elite Eight five times. Before he retired in 2006, he was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001. In 2006 he was inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame.

In his Hall of Fame biography, Chaney is described as a tough but loving coach known for his « Early Dawn Practices at Temple University ».
While the time of day that training began was distinctive, the values the veteran coach imparted to his players are more famous: discipline, teamwork, dedication, excellence, and execution. Chaney’s teams first played at Cheyney State in Cheyney, PA, where he won the 1978 NCAA Division II national championship, and later hardened basketball at Temple University in Philadelphia.
In 2019, Chaney, who was the national coach of the Year was appointed beyond his age. He told The Athletic, “The worst part of getting old is all the people you knew die. So you have to make new friends. “
Chaney is survived by his wife, Jeanne Dixon, who he has been married to since 1953, and their three children.

Good punch Friday that John Chaney passed away. Coach had a special relationship with my father and I remember it from a young age years of it. Once I went to practice and arrived at 4:45 in the morning. Coach blurted out: « Your father would never have made it! » Then he smiled.
